Tommy Robredo reached the second round of the Brasil Open, following a routine straight-set win in his opening match against Thiago Alves Tuesday afternoon.
In front of a sparse crowd in Brazil, tournament second seed Tommy Robredo took to the court to face hometown wildcard Thiago Alves. The Spaniard and the Brazilian began the match in solid fashion, trading powerful groundstrokes from the back of the court. Neither player managed to establish a lead until the ninth game of the set. A forehand error from Alves gave Robredo his first break point opportunity at 4-4. The Spaniard went on to crush a forehand winner to secure the break, 5-4. With the help of some key first serves, Robredo took the first set 6-4.
Robredo, continuing to strike forehand winners, jumped out to an early advantage in set two, breaking the Alves serve at 1-1. He never faced a break point in the match and held serve comfortably to extend his lead to 3-1. He eventually built an insurmountable lead after an insurance break came by way of a lucky net cord at 4-1. Robredo, blasting two service winners while serving for the match, pocketed the second set 6-2.
Robredo faces the winner of the Fognini/Zampieri match Tuesday night.
