Greg Rusedski's optimistic plan to shelve a two-year retirement and return as a Davis Cup hero for Britain has been given the flick by captain John Lloyd.
Rusedski, the 35-year-old Canadian import, had offered to be ready for next month's Davis Cup tie against the Ukraine. With his family heritage based in the opposing nation, the former player thought his timing was prefect.
But Lloyd has knocked back the dream in quick style, preferring to pick his team from active players.
Nevertheless, Rusedski, apparently bored with his new life of leisure and the occasional celebrity television appearance, is said to be considering asking for ATP tournament wild cards in the coming weeks to try and prove that he's not a spent force on court.
Meanwhile, the doubles decision for Britain might not include Jamie Murray, brother of top player Andy,
The elder Murray, 22, has lost both of his matches this season with new and regular Serb partner Dusan Vemic, going out in Zagreb and this week in Rotterdam in the first round. In addition, playing with former partner Eric Butorac, he was also beaten in his first Australian Open match to stand 1-4 this season.
