Feliciano Lopez continues his 2009 downward spiral with a first-round exit at the ABN AMRO. Instead of Lopez, Julien Benneteau will be joining Dmitry Tursunov in round two.
Julien Benneteau def. Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez has now gone 0 for 3 in his first three matches in 2009. The world No. 29 has been in dismal form for the past month. He has lost to Jarkko Nieminen in Sydney, Gilles Muller at the Australian, and now Julien Benneteau. Lopez is generally considered a threat on faster surfaces with his booming serve and big forehand, but Monday was all about Benneteau, who had no trouble keeping up with Lopez. The Frenchman will take on the formidable Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.
Dmitry Tursunov def. Arnaud Clement 6-0, 6-3
Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov gave Frenchman Arnaud Clement an old fashioned beat-down on Monday in a match that took just over an hour. Clement was essentially without options in the first set. He served at 50% for the set, which would not have been so terrible if he’d managed to win more than 10% of his second serve points. Instead, Clement went 1 for 10 on second serves and as a result, he failed to win a single game in the opening set. The second set was slightly more favorable for Clement. He had three chances to break Tursunov’s serve, but the Russian staved each of them off. A single break of serve for Tursunov sealed the win. The Russian will play the winner of the match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Dutch wildcard Jesse Huta-Galung.
