Nine months into his retirement, former clay king Gustavo Kuerten has created a stir in his Brazilian hometown by readying himself to finish his education.
With schooling interrupted by tennis at an early age, the three-time Roland Garros winner, who ended his time in the game in Paris last year, has time on his hands to worry about his future off the court.
Kuerten, still a national sporting idol, will be attending the theatre college in his hometown of Florianopolis, southern Brazil. Classes begin for the 32-year-old at mid-month.
But even taking the entrance exam was a major logistical exercise, with the beloved public figure needing security to sit the exam.
Kuerten finally packed in his tennis after two hip surgeries which never allowed him to return to top form. He won 20 singles titles and is best known for his Paris heroics which could have foreshadowed a possible acting career.
