On Friday, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga added another straight-set win in his path to the semifinals. This time, the Frenchman’s opponent was Kristof Vliegen. He is joined in the semis by Frederico Gil and Jeremy Chardy.
Tsonga has barely been tested in Johannesburg this week. The Frenchman has yet to drop a set, and his latest encounter, a 6-4, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over Kristof Vliegen, took just over one hour and ten minutes to complete. His scorelines have been almost identical in his three matches this week. He beat Thiago Alves 6-4, 6-1 and then bested Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-4.
Vliegen at least made some headway on the Tsonga serve. The Belgian had five break point chances, but he only managed to convert one of them. It was nowhere near good enough – Tsonga broke him four times (twice in each set).
Frederico Gil will be Tsonga’s semifinal opponent. The Portuguese man scored an impressive upset over No. 4 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Gil downed the Spaniard in straight sets after taking a close tiebreaker. Tsonga is also joined by his countryman Jeremy Chardy, who also advanced with a straight-set victory over Sebastien De Chaunac.
