A capacity crowd in Viña del Mar was treated to a 58-minute tennis clinic, courtesy of hometown favorite Fernando Gonzalez on Friday night. The defending champion posted an easy quarterfinal win over 2008 finalist Juan Monaco.
The top-seeded Chilean jumped out to an early lead in the first set, breaking the Argentine’s serve in the opening game. Gonzalez showed his incredible power on the forehand side, blasting winners throughout the set. He went on to secure two additional breaks, increasing his lead to 5-0. Behind 24 winners and an impressive 94% success rate on first serve, Gonzalez closed out the set in 21 minutes, 6-0.
Monaco had no answer from the back of the court, surrendering his serve in the first game of set two. Gonzalez continued to crush huge forehands, cruising to a 3-1 lead. Monaco managed to hold serve twice during the match, but lost serve for the second time in the set at 2-4. Gonzalez, looking strong from the first point to the last, pocketed the set 6-2 with a put-away volley, capturing the match in under an hour.
Gonzalez, a Movistar Open champion in 2002, 2004 and 2008, will next face Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in the semifinals. Cuevas won his quarterfinal match against Chilean Paul Capdeville 7-5, 7-5.
