  • Tsonga, Chardy into quarterfinals

    2/6/09 8:24 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga, Chardy into quarterfinals Two Frenchmen have made the South African Open's quarterfinals. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the top seed in the tournament breezed into the quarters. Jeremy Chardy, Tsonga's countryman, had a likewise uncomplicated second round match.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-4

Tsonga was on full blast in this second-round matchup against Istomin. The match was not even as close as the scoreline suggests. Istomin never had a sniff on Tsonga's serve – the Frenchman breezed through the match without facing a single break point. Not only was Tsonga serving brilliantly, but his return game was clicking as well. He converted each of the three break point chances he had on Istomin. Tsonga's win propels him into the quarterfinals, where he will meet No. 7 seed Kristof Vliegen.

Jeremy Chardy def. Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 6-4

Chardy meant the end of the line for Swiss qualifier Chiudinelli. The Swiss is ranked outside the top 500, but he successfully navigated through two rounds of qualifying and then pulled off an upset over Italy's Flavio Cipolla. He was no match for Chardy, who gained some attention in his home country when he advanced to the round of 16 at Roland Garros last year. Chardy had nine chances to break Chiudinelli's serve; he converted three of them. He closed out the match in an hour and 14 minutes to set up a quarterfinal against another Frenchman, Sebastien De Chaunac.
