David Ferrer breezed into the quarterfinals on Wednesday, but his countryman and tournament No. 3 seed Marcel Granollers was sent packing.
David Ferrer def. Simon Greul 6-3, 6-4
The story of this match was Greul’s serving. The German faced a whopping eleven break points in the two-set, one hour and ten minute match. Some of his problems can be attributed to the effective return game of Ferrer. The Spaniard is an excellent retriever, which often translates into opportunities to break. Ferrer’s difficulty has traditionally been holding serve, and he did that well enough in this match. Greul broke Ferrer once in the second set, but the result was never really in doubt. The win propels Ferrer into the quarterfinals, where he will meet Marcos Baghdatis.
Sebastien De Chaunac def. Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-6(3)
Frenchman De Chaunac scored the biggest tournament upset thus far with his second-round defeat of tournament No. 3 seed Marcel Granollers. De Chaunac surprised the Spanish clay-courter with clutch play on break points. The Frenchman saved five of his opponent's six break chances – one better, as it turns out, than Granollers. The first set was only decided in the final moments of the set when De Chaunac finally secured the first service break. The two men traded breaks of serve to send the second set to a tiebreaker, but once again De Chaunac came through on the big points.
