  • Tsonga, Ferrer through to second round

    2/4/09 3:23 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga, Ferrer through to second round Tournament top seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer advanced easily at the South African Open.

David Ferrer def. Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-0

Spain’s David Ferrer had a surprisingly easy time with Israeli Dudi Sela on Tuesday in Johannesburg. Sela had an easy straight-set win over the Spaniard just last year on the hard courts of Beijing, but he did not have a chance this match. The Israeli made an impressive start, sprinting out to a 2-0 lead and earning break points to go up 3-0. Ferrer held him off to hold for 2-1, and then won every other game in the match. Sela was broken six times in a row in an absolutely dismal display. Ferrer will take on Simon Greul of Germany in the second round

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Thiago Alves 6-4, 6-1

For eight games, Thiago Alves of Brazil actually managed to keep up with the power game of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He pushed the Frenchman to 4-4 until Tsonga secured the first break of the match. The break of the Brazilian’s serve seemed to open the floodgates of unforced errors. Alves only managed to win one more game from that point on, as Tsonga took complete control of the match. Tsonga’s second-round opponent will be Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan.
