Coaching guru Tony Roche still believes Roger Federer is on track to surpass the 14 Grand Slam title held by Pete Sampras.
Despite the setback in the Australian Open final to Rafael Nadal, Federer's one-time mentor believes his ex-student still has the momentum.
"He's one of the greatest players of all time," said the Australian, now coaching Lleyton Hewitt. "If he stays healthy and continues to win Grand Slams, he'll go down as the greatest player. It's probably just a matter of time before he breaks Sampras's record."
Federer has stalled on 13, his last collected at the US Open five months ago.
Roche coached Federer from 2005-07, a period when the Swiss won six Slams. But Federer is still trying to crack the clay code of the French Open, his last frontier.
"He'd love to win the French. If he can achieve that, he's definitely the greatest player that's ever lived," said Roche. "He's played some good matches against Nadal on clay.
"He struggles a little bit in Paris but I think it's just maybe the conditions need to be in Roger's favor - with the weather and the climate. If that happens, it's possible."
