Evgeny Korolev and Viktor Troicki scored minor upsets in the first round of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors on Tuesday. They are joined in round two by Ivo Karlovic.
Evgeny Korolev d. Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-0
Ranked 32nd in the world and seeded fifth in Zagreb, Melzer could not even stay on the court with Korolev, down at No. 115 in the world rankings. Although Korolev has been enduring a slump of late, he is always dangerous due to his massive game and willingness to hit almost every shot as hard as he can. Needless to say, Tuesday was a good day for the 20-year-old Russian and Melzer had no answer. The Austrian broke Korolev's serve once in the first set, but he won just four of 13 second-serve points of his own and dropped serve twice to lose the set. It was all downhill for Melzer after that. He complete collapsed in the second, serving at 36 percent and winning a shockingly woeful two points in three service games. With a 6-0 domination in set two, Korolev cruised into the second round after just 56 minutes. Next up for Korolev is Croatian wildcard Antonio Veic, who upset Guillermo Canas on Monday.
Viktor Troicki d. Simone Bolelli 6-3, 6-4
Bolelli was the No. 8 seed this week, but he was no match for Troicki's power on the indoor hard courts of Zagreb on Tuesday afternoon. Troicki used two breaks in the first set to take it 6-3 and he never looked back in the second, which progressed in almost identical fashion. Just as he did in the first, the 6'4'' Serb surrendered his own serve once, but overcame it by breaking Bolelli twice more. Troicki closed out the Italian with a service hold at 5-4, booking his place in a second-round match against 2008 Zagreb runner-up Ivan Ljubicic.
Ivo Karlovic d. Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-4
One break in each set was enough for Karlovic, who overwhelmed Petzschner with huge serving. The 6'10'' Croat came out in front of his home fans on fire, blasting 11 aces in the opening frame of play and winning all 15 of his first-serve points. Petzschner also got behind immediately in the second, double-faulting on break point in the first game. The German never came close to getting the break back and not once over the entire one hour and two minutes did he have a look at a break point. Karlovic, seeded third in Zagreb, added four more aces in set two and lost just five points in five service games. Next up for Karlovic is Sergiy Stakhovsky, who defeated Dominik Hrbaty in three sets. Stakhovsky got a lucky loser into last year's main draw and ended up winning the tournament.
