Juan Monaco, the 2008 Movistar Open finalist, breezed into the second round, following a straight-set victory over Nicolas Devilder of France.
Monaco, seeded fifth at the tournament, needed less than an hour-and-a-half to dismiss the Frenchman during his first-round match Monday afternoon. The Argentine jumped out to an early lead in the first set, breaking the Devilder serve in the opening game. Taking advantage of a poor first-service percentage from his opponent, Monaco went on to secure a second break for 4-1. Monaco, who faced no break points in set one, closed out the first set 6-2 on his third set-point opportunity.
Monaco captured an early lead in the second set, breaking the Frenchman’s serve at 1-1. The Argentine faced his first test on serve at 3-2, but managed to save three break points to forge ahead 4-2. Behind an impressive 79% of first serves in, Monaco pocketed the match 6-4 on his second match-point chance.
Monaco will play Potito Starace in the second round. The Italian posted a first-round, straight-set victory over Brazilian Marcos Daniel, 6-4, 6-4.
