January will remain the date for the Australian Open, with February temperatures statistically hotter, according to tournament boss Craig Tiley.
High-summer February weather can be brutal in Melbourne. "The last time I looked at average temperatures in January and February, February was hotter in Australia so I wouldn't support that move,"
Tiley told local media.
"Tennis gets a really significant free kick and jump up because it is scheduled for this particular time of the year.
"It works best for us, for Australia in January. It's over school holidays, kids and families can come. And it's the only time where there's no major global event being broadcast."
This year's edition drew complaints including how to deal with three days of record-breaking 45 Celsius heat, late matches which ended at early hours of the morning, and player calls for a date change to give them more preparation time and more of an off-season.
