Fernando Verdasco has only his sponsor to thank for hooking him up with the Andre Agassi camp for December off-season training.
As a result, the Spaniard has reached the Australian Open semifinals after playing the final in Brisane. And he got some free career advice from Agassi during a few weeks spent working hard in the Las Vegas heat just before Christmas.
Verdasco said old master Agassi gave some sound counseling. "It was about a lot of things. It was about the tournaments, how I should organize my year of tournaments.
"He was just giving me advice about what he thinks about all this, about what tournaments I need to play or which weeks I need to practice and be ready for the big tournaments.
"Also about tactics and about my game, how he thinks that I should play more and take more advantage of my game. We were speaking for two hours, a lot.
"It really helped me and and really glad we had that conversation."
Out in the desert, Verdasco trained with Gil Reyes, the fitness guru who guided Agassi for much of his long career.

Well done to Fer. Pity there had to be a loser but he put up such a great fight. It almost reminded me of the Roddick-Younis Alanui match from some years back that finished at 2am or something and ended something like 21-19 in the 5th.
