It is not just Pat Rafter, a few past players have voiced some concerns.
My disappointment with Novak is not because he retired this time; his career record is like 190-70, so he can obviously take a defeat.

The problem I think is with the level of his preparation before a grand slam event. Compare that to preparation of Murray and Verdasco. I know Murray lost earlier than Novak, but Murray did everything right with respect to preparation and attitude, just what one expects from top players. Novak seemed to be struggling against players he should have got in easy straight sets.

Novak, and his fans, have to accept that this time he has dug himself into a bit of a hole; two controversies in a row in GS events is not so good, it is possible that some players are smirking behind his back. It's time for him to keep low profile for near future and work really hard and get back to playing terrific tennis.

Anyway, new season has just started and most tennis fans would like to see him stronger and more determined than ever before, including Pat Rafter I think.

This reminds me of an incident some years back when Mark Philippousis (Flip) had to pull out last minute from a Davis Cup match because of knee injury - one of many. Rafter went public about his annoyance and was almost scathing about Flip's supposed lack of loyalty to the Oz DC team. Others like Hewitt and Woodbridge didn't say anything.
Obviously his opinion carries some weight but I think he should stay out of sensitive issues like this especially since Fed (a current player) already expressed probably what many were feeling. I recall being disapointed with Rafter's comment about Flip which no doubt would have been a setback for the team. What came out more for me was that in being asked by the press later about Rafter's comment, Flip simply said that Rafter had a right to his opinion.

Rafter went public about his opinion of Sampras way before he even got into the top 10. Haven't really forgiven him for that.

Oh, and for those who think I've gone so low; I haven't insulted anyone unless they chose to be insulted. Janhavi, you may be sensitive about your country's issues, but then again whatever I said is true, and its the same conduct I see out here. If you can't tolerate it its not my problem.
