Aussie legend Rod Laver has been picking Roger Federer to win the 2009 Australian Open all along, and he's liking his pick more and more by the day.
Former Australian tennis great Rod Laver is casting his lot with Roger Federer for this men's singles title this weekend in Melbourne. Laver, who won the Grand Slam in calendar year on two separate occasions, said, "I picked Roger to win this event but only through the experience level, having been here a bunch of times."
That prediction came earlier in the week, and the sentiment can only be getting stronger now.
"When he gets to the quarterfinals and semifinals, his game seems to pick up and his errors get lost," Laver added of Federer. That certainly proved to be the case in the quarterfinals against Juan Martin Del Potro, as Federer blew away the Argentine 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
Federer will meet Andy Roddick in the semifinals on Thursday night.
"Pete Sampras has the record with 14," Laver explained, as if that isn't common knowledge in the tennis world already. "I think Roger will equal it here."
Federer stands one behind Sampras with 13 Grand Slam titles. Laver himself owns 11 majors.

I have to disagree with Laver - this is rafa's hour to win his first h/c gs. He came through easily the toughest quarter and without dropping a set. I expect him to take verdasco in 3 and roger in 4:)

Nadal never won a HC GS in the last 4 years where as Fed hav won many! It is not tht easy for Rafa to win over Fed in HC. Fed in 4 sets!

First let's wait and see if It'll be an Fed-Nadal final.
Verdasco should not be underestimated.
But I believe Fed will equal Sampras here.
Even though he had some trouble in the fourth round, I still think he's the better HC-player.

Fed has never won at FO as well yet some people still pick him as fav over Rafa each year. It's not abnormal for predictions and opinions to defer from our own.
As Bonker says, let's wait and see if they even get through their semis. Whilst FV and AR should not be underestimated (RD has a very good tactical coach), neither should Rafa. Fed was also the better Grass Court player than Rafa but than look what happened!

It would be nice to see a non-predicted final, but, with Djoker and Murray out the frey, the semis are gonna be warm-ups for rafa and fed.

It's a hard one to guess really hard...I think I will not predict this one. No way.

I want Roger to WIN! Predictions?... I'm with torres 9. Well, on the other hand it's not going to be easy but I'll take Federer in 5 againt Nadal, and in 4 if Verdasco. Go Roger go! Go Roger go!

Prediction?? I'll give u one, ACTUALLY I KNOW IT AS A FACT!
Nadal will meet Fed in the final and Nadal will win in either 4 or 5 sets, reason being Fed has not done anything too out of this world so far, he was almost bundled out of tournament by some NEVER HEARD OF Berdych guy. Fed trounced Del Potro and showed as if his touches are back, but thats only because Del Potro forgot that tennis balls are round in shape. also i dont know if any of you's have noticed, fed plays extremely well when he's ahead and when he's down against an experienced player who has a better head to head record against him, he doesn't know what to do. E.g Murry, Nadal, Nalbandian (All 3 have a better h2h against fed, and all 3 when leading are likely to win the whole game).
Fed's fitness is quite good, but Nadal is in another level, nadal's top spin and his ability to rally is something fed cannot match even giving him a pair of wings. Nadal also has the same experience and is STILL IMPROVING, while Fed is hitting the twilight. Nadal is HUNGRY, so is Fed, but Nadal is an animal while Fed is a human being.
Now, i am being realistic tho, that there are something that we just cannot plan, if Verdasco cuases the 3rd upset in a roll by taking out Nadal (which is entirely possible, i would think has a higher probability than fed beating nadal), then it will change the whole complexity all together, and ONLY IN THAT CASE, ONLY IF, will Fed express win the title. BEcause I'm giving Verdasco 0% chance of winning title, even tho he is more likely to upset Nadal than Fed, however the final is a completely different ball game altogether, and rearely do dark horses go all the way, expecially given how muich more experience Fed is.

Interesting point there. But you got 1 thing wrong, Nalbandian does not have a better h2h record against Fed. One more interesting is that this is the first meeting where Fed is not the World No.1. So, it will be very interesting, for sure!!
torres9 , 1/30/09 4:35 AM
torres9 - great point about it being the first time it's Nadal 1 and Fed 2. It will be interesting to see if Fed presses at all because of that, tries to go for too much. Probably not, but who knows? He'll definitely say the pressure is all on Rafa because of it, and he might be right but I doubt it. On hard courts and being 1 away from Sampras, I'd say the pressure would be more on Federer.
but completely agree with Bonker - Nadal has to get past Verdasco first and Verdasco has been ON FIRE

AZN2NVY, some never heard of guy Berdych?
Berdych is a talented shotmaker, with a big game and if only his mental game was as good as his shotmaking, he would already be in the Top 10.
Berdych just can't keep it together mentally. He's still looking for his break-out Slam, which in my opinion must come really fast, otherwise he's just one of those players who will never reach their full potential.
With all due respect to the players that Nadal has beaten so far, Federer is a whole different beast. It comes down to a few big points per set and who ever plays them the best will win the final.

He should think twice before taking anything from the JMDP match since the spineless duff-ter didn't put up a fight. And yes Roger would have won that match anyway.
Go Roddick! :)
