  • Roddick makes it a big 10 over Robredo

Roddick makes it a big 10 over Robredo It was a double blow for Tommy Robredo today, a fourth round defeat to Andy Roddick and his 10th consecutive loss at the hands of the American.

Robredo's only real chance of ending that streak came on the clay of Rome last year. Otherwise he's been pretty much overpowered in every other encounter. When you put their respective games together, it's just a near perfect matchup for Roddick.

Having been in such blistering form coming into the match, a fair few people thought he might stretch Roddick but in the end it was a routine 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 win for the seventh seed.

The first set was quite close and maybe if Robredo had found a way to get the upper hand in that things may have swung more his way but instead it was Roddick who worked away at the Spaniard's defenses and earned all the chances. He had a set point at 5-4 but smashed a forehand long. No matter, two games later Robredo was once more staring at set points and this time he netted.

Robredo's subsequent second set capitulation was quite disappointing, as he seemed to give up quite quickly. Roddick inevitably relaxed, sensing his opponent weakening and he raced away.

Roddick afterward was at a loss to explain his dominance over Robredo. "I don't know that I've had a bad day against him," he said. "I feel like I always come off the court having played pretty well. I'm sure the matchup is favorable. I can get my feet under me a little bit and go after some shots. I've just played well against him most of the times we've played."

It's yet another quarter-final here in Melbourne for Roddick and although it's early days he feels his working relationship with Larry Stefanki has been going great, and it helps that they've known each other for a long time. "It's a lot easier when the two guys talk as much as we do. I'm not the quietest guy. It's not like it was with Jimmy where we hadn't spent time together before. We always stopped and had a chat when we saw each other. I've actually gotten along with all the players that he's coached since I've been on tour, and practiced a bunch."
