Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash predicts a possible ten-year drought for Australian tennis after another poor showing for men at the home Grand Slam.
Saying the home game will "get worse before it gets better," London-based Cash fears that the talent pipeline is running on empty.
The last Australian to win a major was Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2002. But Hewitt, a first-round victim this week in Melbourne, will drop from the Top 100 and faces a career fightback as he nears age 28.
"I certainly wouldn't be expecting too much in the next 10 years," said Cash. "It's almost going to get worse before it gets better which is a bit of a worry - we don't have much around at the moment."
Cash, involved in a tennis camp in Queensland, fears that youngster are finding other sporting interests, including cricket and Aussie Rules football. In addition, the entire dynamic of the game as changed. "Tennis has become an even bigger sport internationally than it was back then, with champions from Cyprus and Belarus and countries we didn't even know played tennis.
"I don't think Australians understand how big tennis is worldwide."
