Fans were once again ejected from Melbourne Park after a mini-riot following the Amer Delic and Novak Djokovic match.
Security officials and police were already on alert at the Australian Open after a fight between Serbian and Croatian fans erupted earlier this week following a match involving Marin Cilic of Croatia and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The incident resulted in two men being escorted off the grounds, though compared to past altercations it was fairly mild. Two years ago, officers were forced to break up a riot involving more than 100 Serbian and Croatian fans. Last year, a group of overly-rowdy Greek fans were subdued with capsicum spray.
Police perhaps thought that they were going to get off easy in 2009, but after the Delic-Djokovic match, they once again were forced to deal with nationalistic violence. Dozens of Bosnian and Serbian fans began brawling in one of the gardens of Melbourne Park. The situation escalated to the point where chairs were being thrown. One woman was knocked unconscious when she was hit in the head with a chair, though the victim is said not to have been seriously injured.
The police arrested two men, ejected some thirty others, and they continue to remain on high alert.
