Ferrer falters; Del Potro and Berdych into round of 16 Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych secured their place among the last 16 in Melbourne on Friday. David Ferrer stumbled in his campaign, suffering a straight-set loss to Marin Cilic.

Marin Cilic def. David Ferrer 7-6, 6-3, 6-4

A rock solid Marin Cilic hit 33 winners on his way to a straight-set win against David Ferrer of Spain. The 20-year-old Croat remained calm and focused throughout, moving easily into the round of 16. Ferrer and Cilic traded service breaks en route to a tie-break in the first set. Cilic won the tie-break, seven points to five. Just as they had in set one, the two traded service breaks at 2-1. Cilic broke the Ferrer serve for a second time, taking him to 5-3. A blistering forehand winner on set point gave the Croat a two-set lead. A visibly irritated Ferrer has no answers in the third set and surrendered his serve for a fourth time at 2-2. A steady Cilic held his serve for the remainder of the third set, closing out the match in straights. He will meet Juan Martin Del Potro in the round of 16.

Juan Martin Del Potro def. Gilles Muller 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5

Argentine star Juan Martin Del Potro needed three hours and 25 minutes over four sets to dismiss Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, guaranteeing him a spot in the final 16. Del Potro squandered three break chances in the first set, allowing Muller to push him into a tiebreak. Although the Argentine had the set on his racket at 5-3, he failed to serve it out. A double-fault by Del Potro at 5-5 gave Muller the chance to win the tie-break. Del Potro struggled to convert a slew of break chances in the second set. After reaching a fifth set point on the Muller serve at 5-6, the Argentine was able to win the second set, 7-5. The two traded service breaks at 2-1 in the third set. A settled Del Potro would break the Muller serve for a second time at 4-2, eventually taking a two-sets-to-one lead. A fourth break of the Muller serve at 5-6 put the match on Del Potro’s racket. After nearly three-and-a-half hours of play, Del Potro secured the win. He is set to take on Cilic in the round of 16.

    Tomas Berdych def. Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4

Tomas Berdych and Stanislas Wawrinka headlined one of two men’s night matches on Friday. The Swiss number two jumped out to an early lead at 2-1, taking advantage of the Czech’s inability to convert six break chances. Wawrinka eventually took the first set, 6-4. Berdych made a strong start in the second set, breaking the Wawrinka serve at 2-1 and again to secure an insurance break at 4-1. A struggling Wawrinka watched his first serve percentage slip to a poor 39% and Berdych took the set easily, 6-1. The Swiss, hampered by a neck and shoulder issue at the start of set three, needed an injury timeout. The Czech faced no break points during the third set, and on his first set point, crushed a backhand to win it 6-3. Berdych struck 49 winners in total. A Wawrinka error on match point in set four guaranteed the Czech a place in the round of 16.
