  • Murray through easily, Gulbis loses heartbreaker

    1/22/09 3:59 PM | Cheryl Murray
Murray through easily, Gulbis loses heartbreaker Andy Murray breezed into the third round on Thursday. He is joined by James Blake and Igor Andreev.

    Andy Murray def. Marcel Granollers

Great Britain’s Andy Murray booked a spot in the third round against Jurgen Melzer with a comfortable win over Spaniard Marcel Granollers. Murray was not forced to play his best tennis, as he outplayed Granollers in every aspect of the game. Still, the Scot hit a string of brilliant cross-court passing shots to finish off the Spaniard at the tail end of the third set. Despite the dominant performance, Murray was not completely pleased with his performance. “I thought it was fine” the Scot said. “I mean, there's a few too many sort of dips in concentration. I thought when I got my feet moving, you know, sort of had my mind on the point, I thought I hit the ball well. Got better as the match went on.” Murray will take on tough Austrian Jurgen Melzer in the third round.

    Igor Andreev def. Ernests Gulbis

Young Latvian star Ernests Gulbis looked completely down and out in the first two sets against Russia’s Igor Andreev. The Russian breezed through the first two sets; Gulbis had no break points and was not able to pressure Andreev’s serve at all. Gulbis picked up his serving game in the third, and it was his turn to breeze through the set without pressure on his serve. He secured the only break of serve in the set as Andreev served to force a tiebreaker. Gulbis rode the wave of momentum through midway in the fifth set. The Latvian went up 4-2 – then suddenly lost focus. Andreev cashed in on a series of strange shot selections (including some ill-timed drop shots) and a couple of double faults. The Russian earned the break back, and just when the fifth set seemed as though it was going to be a real battle, Gulbis blew a 40-0 lead at 4-5. Andreev broke to take the match.

James Blake def. Sebastien De Chaunac

James Blake completely overpowered Frenchman Sebastien De Chaunac. The American slid through his second round match in just over two hours. The only blip for Blake came when he failed to win match points at 2-5 on De Chaunac’s serve. Otherwise, the American looked to be in excellent form going into the next round. Blake’s next opponent will be Igor Andreev.
