With the help of a partisan crowd and a terrific serving day, Marat Safin breezed into the third round on Wednesday. David Ferrer and Marin Cilic also advanced.
Marat Safin def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-2, 6-2
Former Australian Open champion Marat Safin blasted 18 aces on his way to a straight-set victory over Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The Russian showcased his trademark power from the beginning of the match. After saving set point at 4-5, Safin went on to break the Garcia-Lopez serve in the next game. The 26th seed clocked an ace to take the first set 7-5. Safin, continuing to serve well, secured a break of serve in the first game of the second set. Just as he had in the first set, the Russian struck an ace on set point. Safin took advantage of the shaky Garcia-Lopez serve in the third set, breaking the Spaniard twice and closing out the match. Safin will likely face the man he defeated on his way to the championship in 2005, Roger Federer, in round three.
David Ferrer def. Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-2, 6-1
Spain’s David Ferrer needed a mere 73 minutes to dismiss Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty on Wednesday. Ferrer, showing no signs of fatigue, displayed the superior movement that brought him to the top of men’s tennis. Hrbaty offered little resistance to the Spaniard, making a total of 34 unforced errors on the way to a straight-set dispatching. Ferrer had a terrific serving day, winning 95% of his first-serve points. He will meet Marin Cilic in the third round.
Marin Cilic def. Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
Marin Cilic and Janko Tipsarevic met for the second time in 2009 on Wednesday. Both men came out on court firing, trading powerful groundstrokes from the first point. The Croat took the first set 6-2 and broke the serve of the Serb in the seventh game of set two. An insurance break gave Cilic a two-set lead. After breaking Tipsarevic in the first game of the third set, Cilic relinquished his serve twice, allowing the Serb to push the match into a fourth set. Both men held serve until Cilic secured a service break at 3-2. Cilic served for the match at 5-2, striking an ace on the first point, then again on match point to set up a meeting with Ferrer.
Safin says he playing better this year even if his best days are behind him.
