  • Federer rock solid heading into third round

    1/21/09 7:49 AM | Kelli DeMario
Federer rock solid heading into third round Roger Federer continues his campaign to add another major title to his resume, equaling the total of current recordholder, Pete Sampras.

Federer, in search of a fourth Australian Open championship, turned in a very solid second-round performance on Wednesday. The world number two dismissed Russian qualifier, Evgeny Korolev, in three quick sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Korolev, although outclassed, was not overwhelmed by the occasion. He showed some promise, striking the ball well, especially on the backhand side.

The Swiss jumped out to an early lead in the first set, breaking the Russian’s serve at 1-2. Federer forged ahead to 4-1, courtesy of a crowd-pleasing, second-serve ace. Federer secured an insurance break to reach 5-1, but failed to serve out the set. Korolev, who struck twice as many errors as winners, gave the break back immediately, handing Federer the first set in 28 minutes.

Federer needed two break chances to take control of the second set at 3-4. He looked very comfortable moving forward, winning five out of six points at the net. Federer took the second set 6-3.

Set three began as set two had, with Federer failing to convert the first break point on the Korolev serve. Federer eventually broke Korolev twice, racing to a 3-0 advantage. A wild error from Korolev gave Federer a third break and the match. A determined Federer finished 10/15 at the net, breaking Korolev seven times in total. Federer will do battle with Marat Safin in round three.

The last meeting in Melbourne between Federer and Safin ended with the Swiss losing a dramatic, five-sets semifinal match to the Russian 2005.

Federer was pleased with his play.

Federer looks forward to facing old rival Marat Safin again.

Federer said he mixed it up against a dangerous young opponent.
