David Ferrer is through to the Heineken Open semifinals as Philipp Kohlschreiber pulls out to due to injury. Robin Soderling and Sam Querrey also advance.
Robin Soderling d. John Isner 6-4, 6-4
Robin Soderling not only got a read on John Isner's big serve, but he also delivered massive serves of his own en route to a straight-set victory on Thursday at the Heineken Open. Soderling fired 11 aces and won an impressive 17 of 43 points (40 percent) on Isner's first serve. He lost a mere seven points in 10 service games and never faced a break point At 3-3 in the first set, Isner had a 40-15 lead but Soderling won four straight return points to break serve. That was enough for the Swede to take set one. One break was also enough for the No. 3 seed to win the second. Soderling will meet No. 1 seed Juan Martin Del Potro for a spot in the title match.
Sam Querrey d. Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-2
Sam Querrey struggled with Gilles Muller over three sets in the second round, but his serve was in form on Thursday and that allowed him to run Nicolas Almagro right off the court. Querrey needed just one hour and three minutes to dispatch the No. 4 seed. The 6'6'' American broke serve twice in the first set and that was more than enough to take the opening frame of play. He dropped only seven points in four service games and did not face a single break point. More of the same continued throughout the second. Querrey broke twice more and this time he lost a mere three points in four service games. The No. 6 seed fired 10 aces and no double-faults en route to the semifinals, where he will take on the tournament's second seed, David Ferrer.
David Ferrer d. Philipp Kohlschreiber (walkover)
The Heineken Open's defending champion is gone without stepping on the court in the quarterfinals. Philipp Kohlschreiber, who outlasted Juan Carlos Ferrero in a third-set tiebreaker on Wednesday, pulled out with a shoulder injury prior to his match against David Ferrer. "I felt fine after last night," Kohlschreiber said."But after five minutes of my warm-up I was feeling big pain in my arm and I felt pain no matter what shot I was playing." Trainers suggested that the German rest the injury in preparation for next week's Australian Open. It would be a big disappointment for Kohlschreiber if he misses the year's first Grand Slam. Last season in Melbourne he scored a memorable five-set win over Andy Roddick en route to the fourth round.
