David Ferrer outlasts Marc Gicquel in a three-set grind in Auckland, New Zealand on Wednesday. Philipp Kohlschreiber, Sam Querrey, Nicolas Almagro, and Viktor Troicki also advance.
In an incredible day of tennis at the Heineken Open, every single one of the eight second-round matches went to three sets....
David Ferrer d. Marc Gicquel 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4
As expected, this turned out to be a baseline war and No. 2 seed David Ferrer needed two hours and 36 minutes to get past Marc Gicquel in three sets. Gicquel had just pulled out a three-setter over Agustin Calleri the day before, but the Frenchman bounced back strong and took the opening frame of play from Ferrer in a tiebreaker. In the second set, however, Gicquel's serve fell off and he put in less than half of his first deliveries, allowing his opponent to break twice. Ferrer gave one break back, but he was able to serve things out at 5-4 and force a third. Neither man wavered in the decider until Gicquel dropped serve midway through the set. Although this match was all about baseline rallies and the servers had only a slight advantage, Gicquel was unable to get back on serve. He had three break chances in the third but failed to capitalize on any of them. Ferrer again closed the proceedings out on his own serve at 5-4 as Gicquel became increasingly disgruntled with various line calls.
Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5)
This second-round rematch of last year's Heineken Open title match lived up to its billing and then some. Philipp Kohlschreiber, who beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the 2008 final, pulled out a tight three-setter in two hours and 12 minutes on Wednesday. The German started off in fine form, breaking his opponent in the first game of the match and consolidating that advantage throughout the opening frame of play. A single break of serve also decided the second, but this time it was the Spaniard who got it, as Kohlschreiber served to stay in the set at 4-5. Ferrero used the momentum to go up a break 4-1 in the third, but the defending champion stormed back to force a tiebreaker. Kohlschreiber took a back-and-forth tiebreaker seven points to five, setting up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 2 seed David Ferrer.
Sam Querrey d. Gilles Muller 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
The serving was not quite as good as it could have been in this matchup of two huge servers. Still, only one break in each set separated Sam Querrey and Gilles Muller on Wednesday, with Querrey emerging victorious. Short points were also the order of the day, as the 6'6'' American needed just one hour and 39 minutes to advance despite going three sets. It was Muller, however, who got off to a hot start, using one break and saving two break points to take set one. Querrey raised his service level in the second and smacked five aces en route to evening the match. His serve dropped off remarkably in the third, but he came up big with it when it mattered most, saving all four of the break points he faced. One break was enough for Querrey to prevail, and he moves on to the quarterfinals, where he will meet Nicolas Almagro.
Also advancing on Wednesday were Nicolas Almagro and Viktor Troicki, both of whom came back from a set down. Almagro recovered to oust Yen-Hsun Lu 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 and Troicki stormed back to defeat Juan Monaco 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
