Philipp Kohlschreiber makes quick work of Dominik Hrbaty on Tuesday in Auckland, New Zealand. Qualifiers John Isner and Gilles Muller also advance to the second round.
Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-2
On paper this should have been a high-quality, entertaining affair. After all, it featured the defending champion, Philipp Kohlschreiber, against last week's Hopman Cup hero, Dominik Hrbaty. As it turned out, however, Kohlschreiber erased Hrbaty in a mere 52 minutes. The German lost just three points in four service games in the first set and used two breaks to dominate Hrbaty 6-1. More of the same continued in set two, as the Slovak could not recover. Kohlschreiber broke serve twice more and again did not face a single break point on his own serve en route to a 6-2 throttling in the second set. The No. 5 seed will next face Juan Carlos Ferrero in what will be a rematch of the 2008 Heineken Open title match.
Juan Monaco d. Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-4
Even though Juan Monaco is the No. 8 seed, his victory over Victor Hanescu has to be considered a minor upset given their recent form. Hanescu ended 2008 on a roll, while Monaco slumped throughout most of the season after injuring his ankle in February. On Tuesday, however, the Argentine took it to Hanescu in one hour and 29 minutes. A whopping six breaks of serve were exchanged in the first set and Monaco's fourth break finished off the opening frame of play. Hanescu picked up his serving in set two, but one break was all Monaco needed to subdue the 6'6'' Romanian. Next up for Monaco is Viktor Troicki.
Also advancing on Tuesday were two big-serving qualifiers. Gilles Muller, who reached the quarterfinals of last year's U.S. Open, dispatched Florent Serra 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and four minutes. Muller fired twelve aces on his way to the second round, where he will take on another huge server in Sam Querrey.
John Isner, who finished runner-up at an ATP event in Washington, D.C. in 2007, defeated No. 7 seed Albert Montanes 7-6(4), 7-5 in one hour and 29 minutes. The 6'6'' American also blasted 12 aces and he will meet compatriot Robby Ginepri for a spot in the quarterfinals. Isner qualified for the main draw by outlasting Thomaz Bellucci in a third-set tiebreaker on Monday.
