Sydney - Lopez sent packing in round one Feliciano Lopez suffered a first round defeat to Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets. Countryman Tommy Robredo fared better; he will advance to the second round along with Igor Andreev.

Tommy Robredo def. Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-4

Spaniard Tommy Robredo made short work of Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the first round on Monday. Robredo had a bit of trouble with his first serve percentage in the opening set; the Spaniard served under 50%. He was able to get through the set relatively unscathed due to some strong play on his second serve. Robredo was able to convert one of his four break chances to take the lead. After taking an early break in the second, Robredo got into some trouble as he was attempting to serve out the match. Melzer had a string of break point chances, but the Spaniard fought them all off. Robredo will play the always-tough Mario Ancic in the second round.

Jarkko Nieminen def. Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 7-6(9)

Jarkko Nieminen scored the first upset of the week over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. The Spaniard relies heavily on his big first serve to win him some free points, but in the first set, he had just one ace and he served at a quite dismal 47%. Nieminen played well on the big points; he was 2 for 2 on break points against Lopez and he saved both on his own serve. The second set was a far bigger battle. The two men traded breaks of serve to send the set to a tiebreak. Nieminen just edged the tiebreak from Lopez to wrap up the match in straight sets.

Igor Andreev def Frank Dancevic 7-6(2), 6-3

Frank Dancevic’s tennis woes continued on Monday as Igor Andreev knocked him out of the Medibank International in the opening round. Dancevic kept the first set competitive. He traded breaks of serve with the Russian to force a tiebreak, but Andreev romped through the breaker, allowing Dancevic just two points. The second set was all Andreev. The Russian faced no more pressure on his own serve, which allowed him to swing freely. Andreev secured two breaks of Dancevic’s serve, yet faced no break points on his own.
