  • Djokovic hopes to get Sydney tune-up matches

    1/10/09 1:34 PM | Johan Lindahl
Djokovic hopes to get Sydney tune-up matches Novak Djokovic is keen to make his tennis amends after New Year's celebrations at home in Monte Carlo which likely contributed to this week's first-round loss in Brisbane.

With little more than a week left until the start of his Australian Open title defense in Melbourne, the Serb is keen to squeeze in as many matches as possible as a wild card at the Medibank International in Sydney.

Djokovic is playing it cool under pressure amid reports that he also preferred a Brisbane morning golf outing on the day before his match to a hard practice session on the courts.

"I feel very nice here," he said. "As Australian Open champion, I get more attention and more expectations from the people."

Djokovic has never played in Sydney, heading a field which also includes his finals victim a year ago at Melbourne Park, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

certainly a wise decision on Novak's part in my opinion..going to Sydney means he'll certainly get a good amount of matches under his belt.Should be interesting.Cant wait for the AO.

Who knows, he may like Sydney golf outing even more than Brisbane's.

smart move, novak! good luck!

preferring a golf session to practice before the match?? what is he trying to do? i think he's a too-relaxed person for a professional tennis player.

sisterofnight12, you make a good point! maybe that's his way of not putting too much pressure on himself, especially after his early defeat in brisbane.

Go Nole, you can do it, you WILL DO IT!

Sydney doesn't guarantee good amount of matches :) I doubt that he will pass 2nd round

a match against Tsonga is worth more than match against Nadal or Fed.

posmatrac , 1/12/09 9:48 PM

atg, you're 'peace of art', what are you talking about, you have doubt, that's your problem, live him alone, and keep your doubts for yourself, have you got it?
Go dearest Nole, just go, and never pay attention to evil people who just wanna see you down, but such a thing will never happen...

Yeah gordana, I have a doubt and I am talking about it... and I think this is right place for this... Maybe you should practice talking to someone out of this site? :) I think that early loss in Sydney may help Djokovic to realize that he must change something in his mind. Excuses that he isn't fit, or racket change simply won't pass on AO. He has technique, knowledge and experience. All he needs is to be able to mentally cope with pressure of being in top three. That is where he fails, and he fails big time. Loosing early in Sydney will relieves him from pressure of "last year champ", since majority already write him off as a winner. And slams are his chance this year... there will be lot of 5 setters for him. The fact that he is the probably most undesirable 5 setter opponent might give him advantage. I guess that will bring lot of medical time outs as well... But rumors won't affect him anymore after USO:)

Nole doesn't half set himself up for target practice, what with his shenanigans on court, taunting partisan home fans at USO and playing golf before his first match of the year. The game needs colourful personalities like that, so all best to him - as long as he doesn't beat my boy McScruff. BTW, isn'y he supposed to be playing this week - Tuesday's matches are over and I still haven't heard of him?

Just found out where he is. ATP website headline: "Djokovic joins party-goers in Sydney". Good to see he's having a good time getting ready for the AO :)

The Joker will probably have the last laugh and win the thing!
