  • Federer keen to get stuck into the season

    1/7/09 9:29 AM | Johan Lindahl
Federer keen to get stuck into the season Roger Federer approaches the 2009 season with calm determination, bolstered by his dominating first-round win in Doha.

The Swiss has buried his loss to Andy Murray in an Abu Dhabi exhibition, preferring to concentrate on the meat of the early ATP season.

As No. 2, Federer says the pressure has now shifted to Rafael Nadal. "He will be under pressure to hold the spot, that's exactly what I'm hoping to capitalize on," Federer told local media.

"I'll plan to raise my levels on the ATP, I'll be ready for not just Murray but also Rafa and Andy (Roddick).

"Before Abu Dhabi, I'd not played for six weeks. That match was a good chance to try out a few things. I have a good idea of what I need to do in the season ahead"," warned the man chasing the all-time record of 14 Grand Slam titles, with one to go to tie Pete Sampras at the top spot.

Federer is the best,he is surely going to overtake Sampras this year. With no big titles to defend early in the year,he will bounce back strong.Just wait and watch!

I like his fiery comments altho sometimes it may be perceived as cocky. I think champions always think positive. I am bored by the Nadal's comments. 'I'll just try my best, I dunt care if I win, I just play' Yamnnn :0

torres9 , 1/7/09 2:07 PM

Nadal prefers to let his racket do the talking rather than develop a cocky, arrogant big mouth followed by a loss that then must be due to some lame excuse.

jean , 1/7/09 2:10 PM

well..we're going player vs player again ( my daddy vs your daddy..lolz) anyway..good luck Roger.

janhavi , 1/7/09 4:07 PM

ok..let me make it clear..im not looking for any sort of an argument... I just didnt see the point of dragging Nadal in this discussion. :)

janhavi , 1/7/09 4:11 PM

Let the best man win........

Casper , 1/8/09 12:38 AM

Good luck Roger. For me Roger is the best player in history of tennis.

I knew Pande would add to it!!!

Nadal always blame his tiredness when he loses. When he lost to Murray he said his knees felt bad. I can show you the Youtube link of his post-match interview if you want. If you say it is true that he was tired, then I also can point out that it is also true that Fed had mono. And then there's also the post-match interview of Tsonga loss in AO2008. Nadal said that it was not Tsonga's true level otherwise he would have been ranked higher. In my opinion, Nadal gave some unsporting comments too. I am just bored that Nadal gives the same, politically correct, defensive comments. I would like if he said, 'Fed is a bitch I owned him'. Then, we will have a real rivalry. Now it's more like gay-rivalry.

torres9 , 1/8/09 10:17 AM

fortunately nadal doesn't care what nasty people like you think!!!

jean , 1/8/09 11:07 AM

right on, jean! some fans like arrogant players who blow their own horns, and some like humble players who let their play speak for them! win or lose, nadal doesn't make subtle negative remarks about other players and he doesn't need to change who he is to please. by the way, "true level" as used by nadal meant to play at that level consistently, as in week after week. has tsonga done that?

memi , 1/8/09 3:40 PM

Stating the obvious, it is true that Tsonga didn't play consistently but just because it's true doesn't mean Nadal should have mentioned it. Fed said he had mono and it's true but you guys are bashing him coz he mentioned it not because it's not true. So why the bias?

torres9 , 1/8/09 5:51 PM

nadal made his racket speak today..tats y lost to monflis badly in straight sets....

ravikiran , 1/8/09 7:14 PM

monfils was on fire! nadal was outplayed! it's the nature of the the game! anything can happen on any given day. that's why tennis is such a challenging sport. maybe, monfils can ride this hot streak all the way to the final! he's definitely looking good!

memi , 1/8/09 7:24 PM

torres9, who said Fed used mono as excuse? which blog?

homos , 1/9/09 2:00 AM

ravikiran I'm wondering how dumb you are. Nadal STILL lets his racket do all the talking, yes. Everyone loses, EVERYONE! Fed lost so many times last year, but does that make him crap? Ending as no. 2 and having a 'bad' year most players would pay a million dollars for? Do you watch tennis with your eyes or through your posterior, mate? Like sstay said, you are just plain mean and nasty. You are very, very sad.

homos , 1/9/09 5:24 AM

torres9, you're just showing how UNFAMILIAR you are in the game of tennis. I don't understand how people get to comment on something their tiny brains can't handle.

agf25agf , 1/13/09 10:00 PM

so many anti-Fed comments here in tennistalk.com said that Fed made so many lame excuses. agf25agf, unless you are an ATP tennis player or a tennis coach in some considerable level then you can say you are more FAMILIAR than me in the game of tennis. If you are not, you can kiss my behind.

torres9 , 1/14/09 8:15 AM

Federer and his warnings. Of late, they haven't been much better than a poodle farting.

samprallica , 1/14/09 12:09 PM

Be careful. A farting poodle just won US 2008.

torres9 , 1/14/09 2:37 PM

Yup he did. But he also warned of a new slam record in 2008, 6 straight Wimbledons, a possible victory at the French, and so on and so forth. Listen, achievements are to be valued, but sometimes you need to respect opponents and the fact that you're human.

samprallica , 1/14/09 2:57 PM

Owhh, look's who's talking? You talk about respect and you come up with a statement like 'Federer and his warnings. Of late, they haven't been much better than a poodle farting'.

torres9 , 1/14/09 5:35 PM

I agree with everything samprallica says. it's much nicer to read his/her comments than "kiss me behind" and slights and spat when down in the argument.

homos , 1/15/09 1:18 AM

Yup you're right. I'm talking about Federer's warnings, and I don't have respect for such comments. His ability as a player is a different story, I will repeat the fact that I consider him the most talented player off the baseline.

samprallica , 1/15/09 11:55 AM

Mr.Homo, I do not care if my comments are 'much nicer' to read. I am expressing myself just like my idol, Mr.Fed. If people like samprallica do not have respect for that, so be it. I never used a cuss word and Fed's comments only reflects optimism but it is always interpreted wrongly as arrogance. Well, since samprallica is a Sampras's fan, I'll forgive him for his sentiments. ROLL ON AO2009

torres9 , 1/15/09 3:08 PM

my, my, torres, the heat getting to you??

remi , 1/15/09 4:18 PM

Lol, I need to be forgiven by a Fed fan. Ha ha. You're not just like your idol torres. You're so much more.

samprallica , 1/15/09 4:18 PM

Forgiveness is a gift only an arrogant person will reject

torres9 , 1/16/09 1:51 AM

..and judgement is reserved only for the almighty, pontificating, pompous idiots

homos , 1/16/09 2:03 AM

so torres is homophobic as well - now that explains ALOT!

homos , 1/16/09 2:27 AM

Err... in what comment did you get the impression that I am a homophobic? You are more idiotic that I thought you were.

torres9 , 1/16/09 2:48 AM
