World No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko has been forced to pull out of the Australian Open with a persistent heel injury.
The injury has been troubling Davydenko for some time and he revealed during a press conference this afternoon that it was causing him problems in Shanghai back in November when he made the Masters Cup final.
It flared up badly last week and despite treatment and completing his first match with Daniel Koellerer in Chennai, Davydenko was unable to take to the court today against Lukas Dlouhy, handing the Czech a free passage into the quarters. He may need an operation so the Australian Open which begins in a fortnight's time is definitely off.
It's a major blow for Davydenko, who came into the season full of confidence after making the final in Shanghai and was looking to possibly reach the last 4 in Melbourne for the first time. The Aussie Open represents his best chance of making a slam final given that Nadal and Federer are rarely at their best at this time of the year.
When asked how serious the problem was, the Russian replied, "It's obviously serious since I'll even miss the Australian Open.
"I've had painkillers even today, and the doctors here in Chennai have tried some therapy for a few days, but I now need to fix this before playing any more tournaments. I need to check my heel and that's why I'm going home, to see what's happening and what's wrong."
