Mikhail Youzhny upsets Igor Andreev on Tuesday night in Doha. Arnaud Clement joins him in the second round with a routine victory over Diego Junqueira.
Mikhail Youzhny d. Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
Youzhny endured a dismal 2008 campaign and entered this week ranked 39th in the world. Andreev, on the other hand, enjoyed his best season as a professional. Nonetheless, the tide turned in this year's opener as Youzhny emerged victorious from this all-Russian affair. Youzhny's 2008 slump, however, seemed to be on the road to continuing early in the match, as his serve let him down in the first set. He struggled to win barely more than half of his first-serve points and he surrendered two breaks to his opponent. Andreev donated one break back, but the No. 6 seed closed out the set on serve for 6-4. Youzhny, however, raised his level considerably in the second and did not face a single break point in five service games. One break of serve was all he needed to level the match. With momentum in hand, Youzhny seized a break point in the opening game of the third set. Although he missed the opportunity, Youzhny broke through in the fifth game for 3-2 lead. He never looked back and served out the match at 5-4 with no problem. Youzhny will take on Victor Hanescu in the second round.
Arnaud Clement d. Diego Junqueira 6-1, 6-2
During a breakout 2008 campaign in which Junqueira rose almost 200 spots in the rankings to No. 77, the Argentine did almost all of his damage on clay. On the faster hard courts of Doha, however, he was overwhelmed by Clement, who thrives on fast stuff and reached a surprising quarterfinal at Wimbledon last season. The Frenchman won 82 percent of his first-serve points and served out the opening set after securing two breaks. Nothing changed in the second, as Junqueira remained content to spin first serves in the court with little pace, most of which Clement took with aggression. Clement lost just five points on serve in set two and used two more breaks to sprint to victory in one hour and eight minutes. The veteran will meet No. 4 seed Andy Roddick for a spot in the quarterfinals.
