  • Stakhovsky, Seppi, and Petzschner advance in Doha

    1/6/09 1:33 AM | Jonathan Morgan
Stakhovsky, Seppi, and Petzschner advance in Doha Stakhovsky was taken to three sets but came through against Rochus while Seppi and Petzschner won in straights.

Sergei Stakhovsky def. Christophe Rochus 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3)

The Ukranian came out a bit flat in the beginning and Rochus took immediate advantage, sweeping the first set 6-2. Stakhovsky came back in the second and played much better. Serving at 71%, he was able to overpower Rochus on plenty of points. Rochus kept fighting and had a chance to break Stakhovsky, but didn’t do so. Stakhovsky kept it up, broke Rochus and took the set 6-3. The third was even throughout, with Stakhovsky’s serve in full flight as he struck nine aces in the final set. Rochus was giving up nothing on return and a tiebreak ensued. Rochus began to feel the nerves a bit as a few loose shots from him gave Stakhovsky the edge. Stakhovsky closed it out 7-3 to advance. He will play either Dmitry Tursunov or Alexander Peya in the second round.

Andreas Seppi def. Denis Gremelmayr 6-4, 6-2

In the first set, Gremelmayr was playing well while Seppi was trying to figure what was happening. They were getting into each other’s service games and the winner was usually whoever took the aggressive shot. After five breaks in the set, Seppi took it 6-4. Seppi got his act together in the second set and figured out what to do. The Italian began hitting bigger and more accurately, much to the chagrin of Gremelmayr. Barring a Potito Starace upset, Seppi’s reward for this win is a second-round date with Roger Federer.

Philipp Petzschner def. Jeremy Chardy 7-6(2), 6-3

Petzschner looked good in this match. He served well and his game was really clicking. Chardy did well for himself in the first set as he fought hard. The Frenchman seemed a bit overwhelmed with Petzschner's game by the end of the first and a tame tiebreak followed. In the second, Petzschner was even looser and dominated his own service games. Chardy attempted to hit a bit bigger in the second set, but to no avail. Petzschner finished it off 6-3 and will play either Albert Montanes or world No. 4 Andy Murray in the second round.
