It could be a big season for 20 year old Marin Cilic and day 1 of the Chennai Open saw him move safely into round 2.
Cilic made a surprise run to the last 16 in the 2008 Australian Open. Progress again to the second week and perhaps even further would surprise no one this time round. When looking at players who could emulate Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in coming from nowhere to scythe through the draw, Cilic is well up on the list.
He took care of business in straight sets against Spain's Alberto Martin though he had to work hard for his 6-4, 6-4 win. Early breaks in both sets proved enough but Martin didn't go down quietly, forcing the 3rd seed to save several break points in set 2. He saved a match point at 6-4, 5-4 before Cilic clinched victory with a clinical volley.
"From the beginning he wasn't missing too much," Cilic said of his veteran opponent. "He was putting a lot of first serves in so I couldn't put too much pressure on him but the good thing was that I played very well from inside the court. I was serving quite well and that helped me to get some free points."
Rainer Schuettler survived the potential banana skin of Prakash Amritraj in round 1. Amritraj raised local hopes for a while when he took set 2 but Schuettler hit back strongly to race through the 3rd 6-1.
