Brisbane - Verdasco tops Tomic with ease Bernard Tomic made his 2009 debut in front of the home crowd on Monday, in his first ATP tour event on home soil. His opponent was the tricky Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Bernard Tomic is being touted as the next big thing in Australian tennis. The 16-year-old won the Australian Open junior title in 2008. He received a wildcard into the Brisbane International, but was unlucky to draw tournament number three seed Fernando Verdasco in the opening round.

Tomic put in a good showing in the first set. He earned four break point chances on Verdasco’s serve, of which he converted one. The Spaniard is not known for his booming first serve, and Tomic had his opportunities on the return. The problem for the young Aussie was his own serve. He won 67% of his first serve points and 33% of his second serve points. n short, Verdasco had too many opportunities (seven) to break. The Spaniard was able to convert twice to take the set 6-4.

After losing the first set, the Aussie seemed to deflate a bit. Verdasco did not help matters for Tomic; he served at a staggering 90% in the second set, missing just two first serves. Accordingly, Tomic did not earn any break points on Verdasco. The Spaniard went on to break Tomic twice in the set for a comfortable win. The match took just over one hour to complete.

Verdasco gets the winner of the match between Mario Ancic and Amer Delic in the second round.
