  • Brisbane - Gasquet, Tsonga and Nishikori earn victories

    1/6/09 8:04 PM | Cheryl Murray
Brisbane - Gasquet, Tsonga and Nishikori earn victories Tuesday was a good day for the French in Brisbane as two of their best skate through to the next round.

Richard Gasquet def. Taylor Dent 7-5, 6-4

Recently recovered from back surgery, Taylor Dent had an encouraging, if unwinning performance against French star Richard Gasquet. Gasquet served particularly well, blasting nine aces past Dent and serving at 65%. Dent, who has been known throughout his career for his explosive first serve, smacked just four aces. Still, Dent managed to keep the score close even without the assistance of his biggest weapon. He earned the same number of break points as Gasquet (five each), the Frenchman simply played the big points better. Gasquet moves into the third round where he will await the winner of Jarkko Nieminen and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Agustin Calleri 6-2, 7-5

Except for a small blip on serve in the second set, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a routine win over Argentina's Agustin Calleri in the first round of the Brisbane International. The first set was all about Tsonga. The Frenchman served at 75%, faced no break points and seemed to be able to break Calleri at will. Calleri stepped up the pace in the second set. He actually went up a break on the Frenchman, but his success was short-lived. Tsonga was able to break back to level the set, then break again for the win. Tsonga will take on the crafty Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the second round.

Kei Nishikori def. Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-2

Japanese star Kei Nishikori kicked off his 2009 season on fine fashion with a straight set drubbing over American Bobby Reynolds. Nishikori gave Reynolds difficulty on serve throughout the match. He earned eight break points and converted half of those (two in each set). Reynolds managed to break the man from Japan once in the opening set, but the rest of the match was clearly on Nishikori's racket. Nishikori will take on the hard-hitting Czech player Tomas Berdych in round two.
