Simone Bolelli stuns Gilles Simon on Tuesday at the Hopman Cup team competition. Italy goes on to defeat France despite falling behind 1-0 after women's singles.
It didn't come in an ATP event, nor did it garner any rankings points, but Simone Bolelli scored one of the best wins of his career on Tuesday at the Hopman Cup. The Italian shocked France's Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 16 minutes.
After Alize Cornet gave France a 1-0 lead by defeating Flavia Pennetta earlier in the day, Bolelli's surprising victory kept the Italians alive. With a chance to clinch the match, Simon, ranked sixth in the world, did his country no favors with 22 unforced errors. A dismal service percentage also allowed Bolelli to break three times over two sets.
"I finally won against a Top 10 player; it's the first time," said an exuberant Bolelli. "I played well, served very good and played aggressive. I missed a few balls but it was almost perfect for me."
With the match evened, Bolelli and Pennetta went on to clinch the win for Italy by defeating Simon and Cornet 6-4, 7-6(2) in mixed doubles.

Hey sstay, as I said in my email, I was at this match yesterday. Simon said in post match interview he practised for too long and got tired. He looked a bit flat and made too many unforced errors. But credit to Bolelli he served well (in the singles and doubles) and was very focussed. Poor Simon kept chidding himself and flicked his racket a few times. But this round robin tourney gives them all a decent amount of singles and doubles practice under their belt at the start of a new season which is good.
I agree, was very impressed with his one-handed backhand, it IS very beautiful and reminded me immediately of Gasquet. I noticed Bolelli last year too, was impressed with him.

I watched this and was impressed, as I was in previous matches Bolelli played last year. Ricky Dimon identified him as a rising star, very aptly. What I like about him is his composure, the cleanness of his ground strokes plus the one handed back hand - almost as beautiful as Gasquet's.
