Next week's Medibank International in Sydney sees a strange turn of events as the women players in action will earn more than their male counterparts competing at the same time.
There's a $1.1 million prize pot but while the women will take home a $600,000 share of that, the men will receive $484, 750.
Has the equal prize money debate taken a sudden twist? After finally achieving equality in pay across the tour, are the top female players demanding more?
Unfortunately, it's nothing quite so sensational....
It's simply a freak result of the new revamped ATP and WTA tour schedules. Sydney is now an elite premier tier event on the WTA tour (just one level below masters series and slam events) with an increased prize fund to attract the very best platers while for the men it remains an ordinary tour 250 event, the same as Auckland, also during that week.
Tournament director Craig Watson confirmed that was all there was to it. "The women's event is a Premier 600, which refers to the prize money figure and the men's is an ATP 250 Series, which refers to the ranking points the new champion will receive," he said.
The Sydney field features some big names with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, and David Nalbandian headlining the entrants.
