  • Roddick, Hanescu advance at Qatar Open

Roddick, Hanescu advance at Qatar Open Andy Roddick takes care of business in his 2009 opener with a quick victory over Ivan Navarro. Victor Hanescu, meanwhile, cruises past Viktor Troicki.

    Andy Roddick d. Ivan Navarro 6-1, 6-3

Andy Roddick served Navarro off the court in the first round of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Monday. The No. 4 seed fired eight aces while serving at 74 percent and he faced just one break point, which he saved in the first set. Navarro, on the other hand, could barely put his serve in play. The Spaniard put in just 38 percent of his first serves and double-faulted eight times in just eight service games. Roddick lost just four points on serve in the second set and his fourth break of the match closed out the proceedings in just over an hour. "I didn't do anything stupid," said Roddick. "I was pretty happy with the way I played." The American will meet either Arnaud Clement or Diego Junqueira for a spot in the quarterfinals.

    Victor Hanescu d. Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-2

Little separated Victor Hanescu and Viktor Troicki on paper, with Hanescu coming into the season ranked 48th in the world and Troicki registering at Np. 56. However, Troicki was no match for the 6'6'' Romanian on Monday in Doha. Early in 2008 it was Troicki who scored a blowout win over Hanescu in Miami, but the Serb had the tables turned on him this time around. Surprisingly, Hanescu did most of his damage aside from his booming serve. He fired just one ace, but he reduce his baseline errors to a minimum and dictated rallies with his stellar one-handed backhand. Hanescu dropped serve once in the opening set, but he consistently made inroads against the Troicki serve and earned 11 break points over two sets. He capitalized on two break points in each set to sprint to victory in one hour and 10 minutes. Hanescu will face either No. 6 seed Igor Andreev or Mikhail Youzhny in the second round.
