  • Brisbane - Ginepri, Dent and Querrey in action Sunday

Brisbane - Ginepri, Dent and Querrey in action Sunday A trio of Americans take the court in Brisbane on Sunday as Robby Ginepri, Sam Querrey, and a returning Taylor Dent kick off their 2009 seasons in Australia.

    Robby Ginepri vs. Julien Benneteau

Since January of last year, American Robby Ginepri’s ranking has risen 120 places. Ginepri is ranked 51st in the world now, with his points collected almost exclusively on hard courts. Julien Benneteau is ranked higher than Ginepri (43), but Benneteau is not a particularly accomplished hard court player. Except for one excellent result on carpet in Lyon, Benneteau’s good results came almost exclusively on clay. He had six straight first round exits on hard courts last year, the streak finally ended with a second round showing in Moscow. Ginepri in straight sets.

    Sam Querrey vs. Robin Soderling

The big serving American Sam Querrey has a tough task ahead of him in the form of Sweden’s Robin Soderling, who came on strong at the end of 2008, winning Lyon and making the final in Stockholm. Soderling is an accomplished hard court player, but Querrey’s booming first serve will keep the Swede on his toes. Querrey enjoys a near-career high ranking of 39th (he was ranked 38th in May of last year). If Querrey is serving particularly well, he could trouble his opponent, but Soderling has better groundstrokes. Querrey might sneak a set, but Soderling should come out ahead.

    Taylor Dent vs. Steve Darcis

After enduring two years of injury, surgery and recovery, Taylor Dent has returned to the world of tennis. The American has struggled with a chronic back injury for much of his career. In 2005, Dent and his massive serve and volley game propelled him to number 21 in the world. Belgium’s Steve Darcis had his best year ever in 2008; he rose to a career-high 44 in May and won a hard court title in Memphis. This is a tricky first round for Dent. Darcis should ease through.
