Taylor Dent searched for his first ATP tournament win since 2006 on Sunday against the unpredictable Belgian Steve Darcis.
Robin Soderling def. Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-3
Sunday’s match was business as usual for Sweden’s top ranked player, Robin Soderling. who required just under an hour to dispatch of American Sam Querrey in straight sets. Querrey, usually known for his monster serve, dished up only four aces and served at 55% for the match. Soderling broke Querrey three times in the match, and more importantly he faced no break points on his own serve. Soderling will face Julien Benneteau in the second round.
Julien Benneteau def. Robby Ginepri 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
Despite winning more total points in the match, Robby Ginepri conceded his first loss of the season to Julien Benneteau of France. Ginepri came out stong in the first set; he lost just four points on his serve in the set and cashed in on one of the two break chances he had on the Benneteau’s serve. Ginepri’s level dropped in the second set. He was not nearly as effective on serve, and Benneteau took advantage, breaking the American twice. The third set was competitive, but Ginepri faltered at the end of the set to give Benneteau the only break in the third.
Taylor Dent def. Steve Darcis 7-6(0), 6-2
Taylor Dent was one service game away from losing the first set to Belgium’s Steve Darcis, who served for the first set. Dent managed to break back and force a tiebreak. From that moment on, Darcis’ game seemed to fall apart. The American took the tiebreak at love, then stormed through the second set, allowing Darcis to hold serve just once (the other game the Belgian won was a break of Dent’s serve). Dent will meet Richard Gasquet in the next round.
