Will the 2009 season be Marat Safin's last on the ATP Tour? Former coach Peter Lundgren predicts that will be the case.
Acclaimed tennis coach Peter Lundgren, who led Marat Safin to the 2005 Australian Open title, thinks the 2009 ATP season will be his former pupil's last.
"He is very much a player who relies on his motivation and if he doesn't feel like it, he will stop playing," Lundgren said of Safin. "If you ask me I think next season will be his last."
But the Swede, who previously coached Roger Federer and Marcos Baghdatis in addition to Safin, is glad Safin is not done quite yet. "Marat is still a world class player who has a lot more to give. The Tour needs him in more than one way. His personality is rare in a very positive way and on the court he can be a true artist if he is in a good mood. And it can be a disaster If he is in a bad mood. Nobody knows how to judge Marat Safin in advance. That's the beauty of him. It would have been sad if he had quit playing now. I'm happy he is still around."
Lundgren is set to take on a new role at a Paris tennis academy in 2009, but he has not ruled a return to ATP coaching sometime in the future. The 42-year-old also served as head man of the British Davis Cup team for a brief stint, but he ended that due to is father's declining health.
