Australian prospect Bernard Tomic was given a wild card into the season-opening Brisbane International, which begins January 5.
Bernard Tomic has been awarded a wild card into next month's Brisbane International. The 16-year-old Australian sensation has stirred some recent controversy by storming off the court during a match at the urging of his father.
Nonetheless, enthusiasm is still at a fever pitch for this up-and-comer, who won the Australian Open boys singles title this season and reached the quarterfinals of the French and the semis of Wimbledon. Tomic accomplished all of that before his sixteenth birthday.
"Tomic shows a lot of promise and it will be fantastic for him to debut on the ATP tour in his home state at his home town tournament," said tournament director Steve Ayles. "It will be a great learning curve for Tomic who'll be able to experience top level tennis against some of the best players in the world."
Although Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be in Doha, Qatar that week, Tomic will certainly be among plenty of the game's top players. The Brisbane field is headlined by world No. 3 Novak Djokovic and sixth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
