  • Tsonga: I feel no fear on court

    12/20/08 5:40 PM | David Cox
Tsonga: I feel no fear on court Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been doing some tough talking this week as the build-up to the 2009 season continues.

The 2008 Australian Open runner-up will be among the dark horses in Melbourne next month and as he showed again by winning the Paris masters in November, no one will want him in their section.

Speaking in Toulouse ahead of an exhibition event Tsonga was asked about his apparent lack of nerves during matches. "It is not an impression, I actually don't feel pressure. When one does not have the money to pay rent at the end of the month and risks being evicted, that for me is pressure," he said. "I'm not playing for my life on the court. Tennis remains for me a pleasure, an exchange. I give my all because I like to be able to look at myself in the mirror and say I've done something well."

It's three months away, but many of the French team already have their eyes on their opening Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic in Ostrava. Tsonga will be expected to lead the team with Gilles Simon and he's relishing the prospect, "We have some great players. We are lucky to have strong personalities and also get on well with each other. I hope we will go as far as possible since Davis Cup is really something very important to me. I am going to try where possible to be on the same continent the week before the ties."

Tsonga begins the 2009 season in Brisbane along with Gilles Simon, David Nalbandian, and Lleyton Hewitt. Last year he gave a few hints of what was to come in Melbourne, during the season curtain-raiser in Adelaide where he took out Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 6-2 on his way to the semis.
