  • New event in Brisbane boasts strong field

    12/20/08 6:13 PM | Ricky Dimon
New event in Brisbane boasts strong field Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be in Doha to start the 2009 season, but there's plenty of talent left over for a new ATP event in Brisbane. Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga headline the field.

A new ATP event in Brisbane, Australia will help kick off the 2009 season and it won't take long to make a name for itself. 2008 Australian Open finalists Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be taking their talents and charisma to next month's Brisbane International, which begins on January 4.

A new $82 million (Australian) dollar arena will host the inaugural event. The main stadium at the Queensland Tennis Center is named Patrick Rafter Arena after the former Australian great, who won two U.S. Open titles.

Djokovic, ranked No. 3 in the world, will be the No. 1 seed. Tsonga is sixth and will be seeded second. Other big names also highlight the field, including:

Fernando Verdasco - The Spaniard was a Davis Cup hero in the title-clinching win over Argentina this fall.

Richard Gasquet - The Frenchman was a Masters Cup participant in 2007 but health problems crippled his 2008 season.

Mario Ancic - Injuries have plagued the big Croat's career, but he is dangerous when healthy thanks to his serve.

Ernests Gulbis - The Latvian showed off his talent by reaching the French Open quarterfinals this year, but consistency is a big problem.

Taylor Dent - Previously retired due to myriad injuries, the American is attempting to make a comeback in 2009.

This event was formerly contested in Adelaide, and Frenchman Michael Llodra won the title earlier this year. Llodra will be back to defend the title this time around. The main draw for the Brisbane International, which awards 250 ranking points to the winner, will be revealed on Saturday, January 3.

Ahahahahaa....Ricky, you made me laugh!
Djokovic is 2008 AO finalist!??? LOL
Who on earth won that GS? Tsonga? Murray? lol
Why are you affraid to state so? You emphasizing that finalist and a winner are the same thing??? hehehe...

I shell stop commenting you anymore. Since your lines are commenting for themselves.

Have a nice season, Mr. Ricky.

Universon , 12/20/08 7:38 PM

Ricky what's going on with you, could you do me a favour, and stop writting a crep, NOVAK DJOKOVIC is AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHAMPION, what's wrong with you, and agree with Universon, it's useless commenting your crapy articles...

gordana , 12/20/08 8:08 PM

gordana,
the explaination is simple: British eyes! The British eyes through which he sees the facts, made him has his opinion biased. Knowingly, of course.

That explains his bias towards Murray.
One more thing for you, Gordana: MUrray iS a SCOT. Not an Englishman! Little bit of history here: The Scotland used to be an independent country and has been conquered and enslaved by English and that lasts for the 300 years! Have you watched "The Braveheart" movie? Had the Scotland regain independence, they would start hating Murr as much as they hate "OVIC"!!

And the current Australian Open Champion has his laste name ended in "OVIC"!
AJDE NOLE!

P.S. The hatred creates nothing but troubles to the haters! It's only matter of time.

Universon , 12/20/08 8:43 PM

You two are extremely pathetic, all this over a single line that you misinterpreted.

JohnnyM , 12/20/08 9:21 PM

Uni and gordana - I'm not British.

Djokovic and Tsonga have one thing in common - they are Australian Open finalists. That's fact.

You should be thanking me for not mentioning the last few matches Tsonga and Djokovic played against each other this year! haha

RickyDimon , 12/20/08 9:50 PM

Ricky, no "thanking" for you, since Tsonga won because he played better. That's what Djokovic said. I don't know why you think is a good thing not mentioning somebody's lost matches?

It's not a shame to lose against better opponent. Shame is when one loses and tries to explain that as his being "exhausted", without giving a credit to his opponent.
There is the difference here.

Universon , 12/20/08 10:33 PM

Uni - Murray did not make any excuses when he lost to Davydenko, at least none that I heard.

Also if I don't have to list Djokovic's losses to Tsonga, then I don't have to list his win over Tsonga, either. I know you love Djoker, but you can't have it both ways!

By the way I am not a Murray fan. I don't dislike him, either. I used to dislike him. Now I'm just neutral.

RickyDimon , 12/20/08 11:00 PM

LOL,

- it was YOU (and not Murr) who tried to explain Murray's loss by his exhaustion, without giving credits to true winner, Kolya. So, I directed shame on you, Ricky, not on Murr, as you tried to show.
- it's not about Djokovic's win over Tsonga, but about your ignorance towards 2008 AO GS winner, in your so-called article?? lol ...laughing because I can't believe that a comlumnist failed to see obvious thing like this one?! Sorry, maybe I shouldn't. Feeling sorry would be more appropriate to the circumstances.
- ahahah...you KNOW I LOVE DJOKER...ahahaha..do you know my home address too? (Maybe you do, if you're undercover spy. I wouldn't be surprised by that one either).
- In here, Ricky, it is not about fans at all. It is about publisher's objectivity. Period.
You must be obsessed by "being a fan" as I never stated who's my fan. I am a tennis fan. That's all.
- If it is true that your statment is being neutral, then too sad for you. You are incompetent as the tennis writer, definitelly. Since you always fails to use essential facts, and always emphisyze lesser important ones. Apparently, tennis is not the ground where you could show your competence, Mr. Ricky. You're in wrong business.

You even had hard time to follow my comments correctly, (as stated by you above), so no wonder you can not write unbiased and objective tennis analysys. Just because seing the facts is out of scope of your competence.

No wonder that your "articles" caused so much frustrations among many posters here (gordana, Universon...). From now on I will stay away from your "articles" by all mean. Good luck.

here's another "great" by tennistalk.com!
- Thanks for your etiquette. :-) "Extremly pathetic", that's who your readers are!! LOL
- when your readers misinterpret your lines, then you showld be concerned, Mr. Jonathan. If you don't believe me, ask your boss.
lol

P.S. Is there any competent writer on this site at all??

Universon , 12/20/08 11:49 PM

If you said so, I have to complemet all the writers that contributes to this site, clearly the best tennis site at the web. I mean even though it's off-season there's news updates every day, it's quite impressive. Cheers!

Laura , 12/21/08 12:44 AM

Uni, I'm not saying that tennistalk readers are pathetic, I'm saying you are.

Most everyone else on this site that comment on articles, such as Laura here, are all fine visitors, and we writers enjoy their comments.

When you come in here like the journalist police and accuse us of bias with no grounds for your claims, its not only rude, but you're also making yourself look like a fool.

JohnnyM , 12/21/08 1:39 AM

Laura, I agree; my sentiments exactly. I don't think the writers are being deliberate, nor are they accountable for every reader's perception. It's ok to express opinions or to point out something that might be questionable, but some things are just too trivial to make a big deal. Anyway, I applaud Ricky, JohnnyM, and other writers for their efforts to keep fans informed on a daily basis. Thanks!

"You two are extremely pathetic, all this over a single line that you misinterpreted"

I've noticed myself and have written couple of times about the pattern authors of this web site consistently follow - be biased towards Murray, Fed, Nadal, Tsonga, etc.. but always against Djokovic. The most consistent and open is C. A. Murray, while author of this text is more subtle, but nothing less consistent. It is 1000% true that Djokovic and Tsonga were finalists in AO, but is it also true that Djokovic is the GS winner (and Murray is not). Could have been written/presented the other way but it wasn't, we can't prove what the author was aiming for, but can genuinely feel there was a hidden message - an intention to downplay Novak for the reasons we can just speculate about, but can not expect author to be honest and list them openly.

Single line jab pattern (or dirty trick approach, call it the way you want) happens to (in)advertently repeat in every single article that considers Novak (or his parents) and if someone brings it out, is attributed as pathetic, paranoid, insane for refusing to have their intelligence insulted. I'll definitively be counted as a member of this group after my post (or i'm there already?) and will be proud to have them as my references.

Novak doesn't need propaganda machinery behind him, he'll speak softly and he'll carry a big tennis racket next year 2009 and we Serbs sincerely hope he'll manage to squeeze # 1 atp spot (can't wait to read tennistalk articles).

And finally, I'm off to watching Braveheart and hope Murray will do the same, one of these days. Cheers.

posmatrac , 12/21/08 7:30 AM

And you CHOOSING to visit this website to constantly find fault with articles and dish out personal insults or subtle and not-so-subtle jibes at the authors is of course all OK.

jean , 12/21/08 7:55 AM

action induces reaction, jibe for jibe, tooth for tooth. yes i find it ok.

posmatrac , 12/21/08 8:41 AM

hey folks, did you know that Serbian Novak Djokovic was quarter finalist on 2008 Australian Open? Just in case if you didn't know, yes he was. Plus, Mr. Jo Tsonga French was runner up at the same tourney!!

Yeah! And now, both those man Quarterfinalist and runner-up are participating in Brisbane!! hehehe...

BTW, Djokovic has a father who disagrees sometimes about what we writers write in our cheap columns, so, let's put him down to shame, disgrace him and his son!

One more thing: Djokvoci is now #3 but Andy Murray is gonna take his place soon! Coz we writers and great analysts can see that in christal ball!we also don't know how Mr. Djoker got that high, but we truly hope that he will be demoted ASAP, and barely can wait till that happen. Once that happene, we all are gonna be so happy to bring that news to the rest of the world, and we'll share our happiness with all who hate that defiant Serb with knowledge, racket and balls and guts!

Till then, let's enjoy our great anticipation as described above.
Merry Christmas!
