Albert Costa was announced as Spain's next Davis Cup captain on Thursday. He has big shoes to fill, taking over a squad that recently captured the 2008 title.
Former French Open champion Albert Costa was tabbed as Spain's next Davis Cup captain on Thursday. Costa replaces Emilio Sanchez, who led the Spaniards to the 2008 title last month. Spain did it without world No. Rafael Nadal--sideline with knee tendinitis--but Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez both stepped up to the challenge.
Costa, who won 12 ATP singles titles in his career, upset Juan Carlos Ferrer in the Roland Garros final back in 2002.
"I accomplished a lot of my dreams as a player, winning at Roland Garros and now I've managed another one, becoming captain of our Davis Cup team," said Costa. "I am coming in to work with a team of great players and I hope I can rise to the challenge. I am very excited by the new project.... But Emilio did an incredible job and he has kind of left me in a bad spot. It'll be nearly impossible to better what he did."
Costa and company will first have to get past Sebia in the opening round on the weekend of March 6-8. The Spaniards have home-court advantage and will host the Serbs in Benidorm.
"It will be a very difficult first match," Costa admitted. "They have some very good players like Novak Djokovic, but, like we have to do every year, we need to take it one step at a time and try to make sure we pass the round."

Costa didn't mentioned Nenad Zimonjic. That might cost Costa a lot.
