The ITF named Rafael Nadal as its men's singles world champion for 2008. Nenad Nimonjic, Daniel Nestor, and Jelena Jankovic on the women's side also received honors.
Adding another accolade to his incredible 2008 resume, Rafael Nadal was named world champion for men's singles by the International Tennis Federation on Wednesday. The ITF selects its world champions based on a system that includes results from the ATP and WTA tours, along with Grand Slams, Olympics, and the Davis Cup and Fed Cup.
Nadal, who overtook Roger Federer as the No. 1 player in the world, was the no-brainer selection as he won Grand Slams at the French Open and Wimbledon and also won gold at the Beijing Olympics and captured two Masters Series titles on clay. Spain also won the Davis Cup, and although Nadal missed the final due to knee tendinitis, he helped his countrymen at least make it that far.
"It has been an incredible year for me and I will never forget all that's happened," said Nadal. "To finish the year ranked No. 1 was really special. "It has been a wonderful year for Spanish sport, and I am happy to have been part of it."
It was also a great year for Serbia, and Jelena Jankovic received the ITF honor on the women's side. Fellow Serb Nenad Zimonjic finished the year as the No. 1-ranked men's doubles player and he also took home the ITF accolade along with Canadian partner Daniel Nestor.
Said ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti of the singles winners: "Both are excellent ambassadors for their countries, for whom they have achieved considerable success both as individuals and in the ITF team competitions."
