Andy Roddick is ready to go with the 2009 season less than three weeks away. Roddick finished 2008 in the Top 10, but failed to capture any huge titles.
Armed with a new coach and a clean bill of health, top-ranked American Andy Roddick is looking forward to resurrecting his career in 2009.
It's not like Roddick's 2008 campaign was a disaster, but other than defeating Roger Federer at the Masters Series Miami, he did not steal too many headlines. He won early titles in San Jose and Dubai (defeating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic en route), but did not lift another winner's trophy until September (Beijing). Injuries derailed much of the latter part of the season for Roddick, and also forced him out of the Masters Cup after one match. Nonetheless, Roddick still finished the year in the Top 10 and has hired coach Larry Stefanki to take him higher. Stefanki had previously coached Fernando Gonzalez.
"This year was probably the toughest for me in terms of injuries," explained Roddick. "I've never really been hurt before this year.... I feel good now. I'm just looking forward to being prepared and in good shape for next year."
While working out with Stefanki during the off-season, Roddick took some time to participate in a charity event in Knoxville, Tennessee on Sunday along with compatriot John Isner. The event raised more than $300,000 for at-risk children. WTA stars Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams also joined the fun, and University of Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl served as chair umpire.
