2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis is hoping to breath life back into his injured tennis with a fresh start in 2009 after a season to forget.
The Cypriot, ranked 98th after once standing 16th, was last felled in Basel in October with a back injury, the latest chapter in his run of bad luck. In addition, he has ditched Swedish coach Peter Lundgren.
The 23-year-old has had nearly two months to prepare for his place as a wild card into the new Brisbane event starting January 4. "It's been a tough year with three injuries - I'm looking forward to a new year," he told local media.
"It's just the way I am, to smile, it's my personality - how I am in my life. This is the first time it's (a run of injury) happened to me. I'm dying to play a match.
"The most important thing is to play some matches and get the machine working again - get a feel for the game because I played not so many matches."
Baghdatis managed to complete only four matches in the second half of 2008, retiring three times. He figured in last January's controversial loss against Lleyton Hewitt, a match which began around midnight and did not end until almost 4:40 in the morning.
