Chris Guccione will try to cling to his fragile place in the ATP Top 100 without a coach as he begins 2009 after parting company with Anthony Lane, a longtime mentor provided by the Australian Institute of Sport.
The mid-year split leaves Guccione, a big hitter whose unfocused game has left him languishing on the fringes of success, hanging at the ranking precipice.
The 23-year-old is clinging to a place in the ATP century, standing 96th after topping out at 67th last spring. After reaching a surprise Sydney final to start 2008, Guccione slipped badly, compiling a 6-16 record through the end of the year, including ten first-round losses.
Nevertheless, Gooch won't be deterred from his decision: "I just felt it was time for a change," he told Australian media. "Anthony obviously taught me a lot, but I wanted to go in a different direction. We parted on good terms."
Guccione, who won three of five Davis Cup matches this season, said that seeking a new mentor is tough. "You have to find the right person that you want who can travel the weeks you want to travel. I have a few people in mind, but I have to work out the logistics of it."
