2004 French Open champion Gaston Gaudio is planning a return to the tour after missing most of 2008
Gaudio is currently working his way back into shape and competing in an exhibition in Bueno Aires over the weekend. Yesterday he beat Jose Acasuso 6-4, 6-3 so the form is evidently returning. He takes on Juan Monaco and Guillermo Canas over the next few days.
At the end of 2007, Gaudio suffered a serious ankle injury during an Italian challenger event and subsequent scans revealed that 2 of the 3 ligaments were torn. Gaudio returned midway through January but the comeback was too soon and aswell as suffering two heavy losses to Kei Nishikori and Santiago Ventura he re-aggravated the injury. Struggling with motivation, several comebacks were canned and there were rumours he was going to retire and become a commentator.
Gaudio said "From February onwards, for 7 months I was an ex-player. I kept up a little of my fitness and that was it. Then my desire for tennis returned and now I'm ready to play again. For me I still take each day as it comes."
However last month he started playing exhibitions again in Santiago, losing in 3 sets to Nicholas Massu.
Gaudio has asked for wildcards into the January-February clay ATP tournaments in South America. Otherwise he'll have to go for qualifying or challengers as his protected ranking is down in the 200s.
